The apostle Peter knew what it meant to stand on sinking sand. Bold and confident, he stepped out of the boat onto the water, walking toward Jesus. But the moment he shifted his focus from Christ to the wind and waves, he began to sink. Like Peter, we often start strong in faith, but when trials, uncertainties, or fears arise, we waver. Yet, even in his doubt, Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!”—and immediately, Jesus reached out and lifted him up. This moment reminds us that no matter how unstable life feels, Jesus is always near, ready to rescue us. His providence, security, and love never fail. (“And He said, ‘Come!’ And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!'” Matthew 14:29-30)
Peter’s story also warns us about trusting in the wrong things. He was one of Jesus’ closest disciples, but his strength, passion, and even his position among the Twelve could not sustain him. When Jesus was arrested, Peter denied Him three times, proving that human courage is unreliable (“And then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, ‘Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.” Luke 22:61-62). Today, we can be tempted to rely on our jobs, relationships, influence, or wealth for security, but these are like shifting sand—unstable and temporary. When storms hit, they cannot hold us. Only Christ, the solid rock, can. Let us stand firm in His unshakable truth, knowing that He alone is our foundation.
