I want to tell you a story about a king who had everything—riches, power, respect, and most importantly, the heart of God. Yet, despite all that, he took what wasn’t his.
David, a man after God’s own heart, saw Bathsheba and took her for himself (2 Samuel 11:2-4). When she became pregnant, he tried to cover it up, arranging for her husband to be killed (2 Samuel 11:14-17). David thought his sin was hidden—until the prophet Nathan told him a parable about a rich man who stole and killed a poor man’s only lamb, then revealed, “You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7), exposing David’s own guilt in taking another man’s wife and orchestrating his death.
Sin blinds us. Like David, we think we’re better than we are, but we’re guilty too—prideful, selfish, deceitful. Paul says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The problem isn’t just David’s heart—it’s ours.
So, what do we do? In Psalm 139:23-24 it says: “Search me, God, and know my heart; Put me to the test and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there is any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.” We must daily humble ourselves, ask God to search us, and repent.
Thank God that there’s hope! David cried out in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” And through Jesus, we’re not just forgiven—we’re made new according to 2 Corinthians 5:17. (“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17)
The truth is, sin not only exposes our brokenness but it blinds us to who we really are. But thank God for a Savior and His name is Jesus! So let today, right now be our opportunity to humble ourselves, confess, and allow Jesus to transform our hearts.
