The Thought For Today

Encouraging You Through God's Word

Recently, a close friend and I admitted that our desire to dive into God’s Word had been fading. We were frustrated by our struggle with inconsistency in our walk with the Lord. During our conversation, the Holy Spirit reminded me of a crucial truth: it’s not about how long we read the Bible or how perfectly we pray, but whether we’re setting our minds on Jesus.

This shift in perspective was freeing. If you’re feeling like your spiritual fire is flickering, be encouraged: you’re not failing, but maybe need to recalibrate and focus on Him. Romans 12:2 reminds us to renew our minds daily, even with a small portion of Scripture. It’s not about time, but the heart’s posture. Keep a verse with you for busy moments, and remember, God’s mercies are new every morning. (“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2) (“The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 NASB)

Next, cultivate gratitude through prayer according to Colossians 3:2. (“Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:2) Take time to thank Jesus throughout the day. Paul reminds us in Romans 8 that even when prayer feels hard, the Holy Spirit helps us when we don’t know how to pray. (“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26)

Finally, fix your eyes on Jesus through worship. Worship can happen anytime and anywhere, whether in song, reflecting on His goodness, or sharing His love with others. Let every act glorify Him, remembering His faithfulness and grace. (“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2)

Whether you and I are reading God’s Word for 15–30 minutes, praying, worshiping, or loving our neighbor, all these are ways of setting our minds on Jesus. If you feel inconsistent, don’t be discouraged—God’s grace is sufficient, and His love is steadfast. Seek Him daily, and trust that He is drawing you closer to Him, even when you miss the mark.
