I’ve often found it hard to truly grasp the depth of God’s forgiveness, especially when it came to forgiving myself. There were times I struggled to let go of guilt, feeling like I had to somehow “earn” God’s forgiveness after every failure. But God’s grace doesn’t operate that way. I realized that while my human mind can never fully understand His forgiveness, His Word and His actions are completely faithful. In 1 John 1:9, we are reminded, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” God’s forgiveness is not conditional or based on how “good” we feel; it is rooted in His perfect love. I had more problems forgiving myself than God ever did but thank God that His forgiveness isn’t limited by my understanding. His forgiveness is complete, and it washes away the weight of my sin.
The transformative power of God’s love is clear throughout the New Testament. As Colossians chapter 1 verses 13 and 14 reminds us, “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” And in Ephesians 1:7, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” This isn’t a forgiveness that can be earned or added to; it is finished, complete, and eternal through the work of Jesus. As believers, we must trust that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was fully sufficient to remove our sin and restore us to the Father. There is nothing left to add, and nothing left to prove. God’s great love for those who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior assures us that, in Christ, our sins are forgiven. It is finished.
