In Job 38, God responds to Job’s complaints with a divine reality check: “Who is this who darkens the divine plan by words without knowledge?… Now tighten the belt on your waist like a man, and I shall ask you, and you inform Me!” (Job 38:2–3)
Before this moment, Job—though righteous—suffered greatly and wrestled with questions about God’s justice, while his wife and friends offered accusations and empty answers. It’s a mirror of us today: thinking our words, plans, and decisions somehow are better than God’s. But God’s response reminds us that His wisdom, power, and purposes are far beyond human understanding—and that trusting Him is greater than trying to explain Him, figure out things on our own, or taking situations into our own hands.
Let’s be honest—there are times we act like the outcome depends entirely on us. But here’s the heart check we need to hear: “It Won’t Be Done…Because You’re Not God”.So, you may be thinking, “Well, what is the good news for the believer?” or “How can I step down from this false throne?” Here are 3 powerful truths that bring our thought home.
Truth #1: God’s Wisdom Is Perfect—Ours Is Flawed
I love how James expands on the wisdom of God and where it comes from in chapter 3. Verse 17 proclaims, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy.” This wisdom that is from above is consistent with the character of God. As we surrender to the Holy Spirit, He helps us step off the false throne of self-reliance and trust the One whose wisdom never fails.
Truth #2: Jesus Is Proof That God’s Way Is Best
Jesus’ surrender in the garden in Luke 22 (“Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” v42) demonstrates to us that our way or our circumstances may look hard, unbearable, or even impossible, but choosing God’s will always leads us to victory. Think some more about the Cross. It looked like failure, outright defeat and humiliation, but I love how the Apostle Paul described Philippians 2 verses 8 and 9 by saying, “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, death on a cross. For this reason also God highly exalted Him…” So, when your life is looking like you are taking an “L” just know that every step of obedience to the Father’s will is always a win.
Truth #3: God’s Word Can Be Trusted—Our Way Cannot
David testifies in Psalm 19:7 by saying, “The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” The truth is that God did not create us to be our own guide or the author of our own story. He has given His Word which is true, sure, perfect, and never wrong.
Our encouraging takeaway: We’d be wise to step off the throne of our own lives- because there’s already a King on the throne and His name is Jesus.
