Matthew 5:4 says, “God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” There are times in each of our lives when we must mourn. The biblical definition for mourn is to express grief or sorrow. Many of us mourn the loss of a friendship, the end of a relationship, or the death a family member. Since mourning is a part of life, “Mourning Monday” is bound to affect each of us.
Having a relationship with Jesus makes mourning so much more bearable. With the help of the Holy Spirit, you and I can live out 1 Thessalonians 4:13. It says, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.” We can stand on Psalm 34:18 because it says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” Finally, you and I can lean into Romans 8:18. It reminds us, “Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.”
Remember, it is ok to mourn. When our hearts are breaking, confusion bombards our minds, and peace seems to allude us, we can run to Jesus, and He will provide all the comfort we need.
“Mourning Monday” Prayer:
Most Gracious, Heavenly Father, I come to you broken, full of hurt, pain, and confusion. Jesus, I simply do not understand the “why”! Nevertheless, I put my trust in you. Comfort me, Lord, like only you can. Extend your peace to each part of my broken places. In you and in you alone, I find grace and mercy. Forgive me for not being what you have called me to be. Forgive me for not fully trusting you. My desire is to meet you in peace! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
