If you have ever heard the word, “Nevertheless”, you might say to yourself, “What’s so special about this word?” “It’s just another word in the English language.” Well, the word, “Nevertheless” is powerful. It means surrendering or moving forward despite something.
As Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, his spirit was heavy and full of grief according to Matthew 26:38-39. As Jesus prayed to the Father, he said in Mark 14:36, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” As Jesus prayed this prayer, his flesh (the human side) did not want to die. He prayed to the Father for him to remove the cup. You see, the cup represented death, humiliation, and pain. It was possible for God to remove the cup. However, Jesus knew His assignment. Jesus said in Luke 19:10, “For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”
As Jesus continued to pray, he said, “Nevertheless.” This statement is compelling because it shows not only the weakness of the flesh, but more importantly, how Jesus surrendered His Will to the Will of God. If you think about yourself, when you are mistreated or lies are spread about you, can you say, “Nevertheless” I will love you and pray for you? Will you say, “Nevertheless” I will trust in Him, even if I can’t see God moving in my current situation?
We will be able to die to our will and allow Jesus’ will to rule in our lives when we can say “Nevertheless” in the face of any opposition. Are you prepared to say, “Nevertheless” today and to die to yourself?
Let’s pray:
WOW! God, you simply amaze me. What you did for me, a nothing, a nobody, a wretch undone- I thank you and I give you the glory. All glory and honor and power are due to the name of Jesus. Thank you for being my all and all. Despite myself, you still loved me. For that I will praise you forever. If you can say “Nevertheless” while facing death, then surely so can I. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Wow! If we can say ‘nevertheless’, despite anything that’s going on around us, it helps us to keep our focus on the Lord. Beautiful!
