Each of us has experienced someone we have trusted deeply that made a promise to us but failed to keep it. Perhaps they meant well, but their human limitations—forgetfulness, weakness, or fear—got in the way. Now, compare that with a God who is perfect, unchanging, and unfailing in every way. He is not like man. This truth alone should stir our hearts to worship and praise Him.
When I think about our thought, “Not Like Man”, I compare God’s love to man’s love. God’s love originated with Him, love is not from us. Real love is unearned and demonstrated through the sending of Jesus Christ for our salvation, showing a love that is much deeper than human love. While human love often fades or is conditional, I thank God that His love is steadfast and unshakable. (“By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 4:9-10)
Then when you and I compare God’s longsuffering to man’s patience, the Apostle Peter reminds us that, “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) Human patience wears thin, we get tired of telling people a certain thing over and over again, or we get upset when they do not think like us, act like us, or make certain decisions as we might, but again I thank God that His longsuffering is rooted in His desire for everyone to find salvation.
Each of us at one time or another have struggled to truly forgive someone, but God completely forgives us. Ephesians 1:7 speaks of God’s forgiveness through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, offering redemption and forgiveness as a free gift through grace. The last time I checked, no human has made such a great sacrifice. (“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”)
Finally, unlike man’s words, which can be unreliable, God’s Word is unfailing and trustworthy. I love how Numbers 23:19 reminds us, “God is not a man, that He would lie, nor a son of man, that He would change His mind; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”
Let us lift our hearts in worship, for God is not like man—He is perfect, faithful, and worthy of all praise, forever and ever. Amen.
