Sometimes, I look at my life and think, I wasn’t the sharpest crayon in the box. I wasn’t the fastest learner. It wasn’t on my résumé. But somehow, God still opened doors for me that I wasn’t qualified for. I’ve had moments of feeling insecure, inadequate, and unworthy, but time and time again, God has reminded me—it was never about my ability, but about His power working through me.
Think about Moses. He didn’t feel like a strong speaker (“Then Moses said to the Lord, ‘Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.’” Exodus 4:10), yet God called him to lead a nation. Moses felt inadequate, but God’s call wasn’t about his ability; it was about God’s strength in his weakness. When we feel unqualified, God’s power is displayed through our weaknesses.
Think about Jeremiah. He felt too young (“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5), but God had appointed him before birth. God’s calling isn’t based on age or status but on His sovereignty and purpose, which existed long before we understood it.
Consider Ananias, an ordinary disciple (Acts 9:10-17). When God called him to heal and baptize Saul, he hesitated, feeling unqualified and scared. But through his obedience, God used him to change history. Like Ananias, God often calls the unqualified to do extraordinary things, empowering us through our weaknesses.
It’s not on my résumé, but when I face all that I am not—smart enough, capable enough, strong enough, brave enough—God whispers, My grace is sufficient, for My power is made perfect in weakness (“And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9). God’s grace fills the gaps of our inadequacies. Is anyone else grateful that it is through those gaps that God’s power is most obvious. Our weaknesses don’t disqualify us—they allow God’s power to be on display.
So, if you ever doubt yourself, if you ever feel like you’re not enough, remember this: God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called (“For consider your calling, brothers and sisters, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-27). It’s not about what’s on your résumé. It’s about who is writing your story.
