The Thought For Today

Encouraging You Through God's Word

We have all encountered people uttering this phrase to us. It is highly probable that we have even said it ourselves. When circumstances take a turn for the worse and life is lifein’, this is the phrase we quietly whisper to prevent ourselves from going over the edge… “God doesn’t put more on you than you can bear.” But is that biblical?

No, this statement is not biblical. Jesus clearly stated in the initial section of John 16:33 that we will encounter trouble. Nevertheless, Jesus doesn’t leave it at that. He encourages us to be courageous. Why? Because He has already conquered the world. Furthermore, if we connect our trials, tribulations, and troubles to temptation, the Bible assures us that we will not be tempted beyond our capacity to resist, as stated in 1 Corinthians 10:13. However, this does not imply that life will never exceed our ability to cope. Sometimes it will.  If we could cope with life’s ups and downs, mountains and valleys then we wouldn’t need God at all, right? Let’s be honest—sometimes we are so prideful, we need that reminder that we really aren’t in control, and we need help. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing in John 15:5. Our reliance on Jesus is what binds us to Him.

Life is full of challenges such as temptation, discouragement, tragedy, pain, disappointments, and sorrow. Nevertheless, we will emerge stronger on the other side due to the divine power and grace of God.
